  10. Notepad or WordPad window.

  40.                            ABOUT LIVEUPDATE

  43. LiveUpdate is the Symantec technology that permits an installed
  44. Symantec product to connect to a Symantec server automatically for
  45. program and virus definitions updates.  The connection is made through
  46. either a preset telephone number or an Internet site.  LiveUpdate can 
  47. also be configured to use a local network server as bandwidth requires 
  48. (for corporate customers).  To do this, download the LiveUpdate 
  49. Administration Utility at:

  55.                               WHAT'S NEW
  56. **********************************************************************

  58. LiveUpdate 1.5 has many new changes:
  59.  
  60. One Button Update:
  61. LiveUpdate 1.5 now has the ability to retrieve and install updates for 
  62. multiple Symantec products simultaneously.  Many Symantec products released 
  63. after February 1999 contain this feature.
  64.  
  65. Download Resumption:
  66. LiveUpdate can resume interrupted transfers transparently.  If you've 
  67. ever had a download interrupted by call-waiting or internet problems, you'll
  68. appreciate this new feature.  
  69.  
  70. Download resumption is available for both the HTTP and Modem transports.
  71. It is not available for the FTP transport or for the LAN transport 
  72. (corporate customers only).
  73.  
  74. Proxy Servers:
  75. Most internet users don't need to configure their computers to use a proxy 
  76. server, but we've made it easier then ever via a new Proxy tab in the
  77. LiveUpdate Control Panel.
  78.  
  79. Note: If you do not know what a proxy server is, it may be best to set options
  80.       using the Proxy tab only when instructed to do so by a network 
  81.       administrator.

  83. To configure LiveUpdate to use a proxy server, simply select the Proxy tab 
  84. and put a checkmark in "Connect through a Proxy Server".  By default, 
  85. LiveUpdate will use your Internet Explorer Proxy Settings (if available), 
  86. but you can easily specify your own custom settings for both FTP and HTTP.

  88. * Note: LiveUpdate now uses HTTP by default.

  90. If your proxy server requires authorization for outside access, you can also 
  91. enter a Username and Password for either FTP or HTTP (or both) proxy access.  
  92. Please note that this is different from the username and password you use to 
  93. connect to your Internet Service Provider (if you use one).  
  94.  
  95. Certain networks are configured only to allow FTP to use a "passive 
  96. connection".  If you have difficulty using the FTP transport, check the
  97. box on the Internet tab of the LiveUpdate control panel labeled "Use Passive 
  98. mode FTP transfers".
  99.  
  100. If you have any difficulty configuring your proxy settings, contact your 
  101. network administrator for assistance.  Each network is different, so 
  102. only they can help you with this step.

  106.                            RUNNING LIVEUPDATE
  107. **********************************************************************
  108.  
  109. Most Symantec products which use LiveUpdate offer a LiveUpdate button.  
  110. In Norton SystemWorks, for example, you can run LiveUpdate from the 
  111. SystemWorks Integrator.  You can also run LiveUpdate from the LiveUpdate 
  112. Control Panel. This will automatically download updates for all Symantec 
  113. products which use our One Button Update technology (discussed above).

  117.                           UPDATING LIVEUPDATE
  118. **********************************************************************
  119.  
  120. Sometimes even the update program needs an update.  LiveUpdate will
  121. automatically check to see if there are any available updates to 
  122. itself each time it is run.  It should update itself transparently 
  123. (without any extra input), but in certain rare cases may require that
  124. you run LiveUpdate one additional time to complete your session 
  125. after it has finished its update.  If this is required, it will tell
  126. you.

  130.                    INSTALLING/UNINSTALLING LIVEUPDATE
  131. **********************************************************************
  132.  
  133. All Symantec products which use LiveUpdate install it themselves, but
  134. if you encounter a problem with LiveUpdate that you or Technical 
  135. Support believe to be the result of an install problem or corrupted
  136. files, you can reinstall easily.
  137.  
  138. To reinstall, locate LUSETUP.EXE on your system or download the latest 
  139. version from the Internet at:
  140.  
  141. ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/updates/
  142.  
  143. Once the file is on your system, double click the icon.  You will be 
  144. asked if you wish to install LiveUpdate.  Answer yes, and it will 
  145. automatically reinstall.  Your previous settings will be saved,
  146. and you will still be able to run LiveUpdate from any Symantec product
  147. without further configuration.
  148.  
  149. If you wish to uninstall LiveUpdate, please note that you will no
  150. longer be able to receive updates to your Symantec products.  Your
  151. configuration information will also be removed so that when you reinstall,
  152. you may need to re-configure custom proxy settings or connection info.
  153.  
  154. To uninstall LiveUpdate:
  155.  
  156. 1. From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel.
  157.  
  158. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.  
  159.  
  160. 3. Select LiveUpdate from the list, then click Add/Remove.
  161.  
  162. To reinstall LiveUpdate at any time, find the LUSETUP.EXE
  163. at the above URL and simply double-click it.

  167.                         TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  168. **********************************************************************
  169.  
  170. LiveUpdate uses four possible methods for retrieving updates and 
  171. installing them.
  172.  
  173. 1.  HTTP
  174.  
  175. We now use HTTP to download files from the Internet.  This replaces
  176. FTP as our primary method for the following reasons.
  177.  
  178.  a: With the advent of the World-Wide-Web, HTTP is more widely used
  179.     than FTP. More Internet Service Providers and corporations
  180.     are configured to allow unrestricted HTTP transfers than FTP.
  181.     This reduces the likelihood that you will need to configure 
  182.     LiveUpdate manually.
  183.  
  184.  b: Through switching to HTTP, LiveUpdate now offers Download
  185.     Resumption via the Internet.  If a LiveUpdate transfer is
  186.     interrupted because of a severed connection to the internet
  187.     (due to line noise or call waiting, for example) or merely
  188.     cancelled, it can be continued the next time LiveUpdate is run.
  189.  
  190.  c: HTTP is slightly faster than FTP.  Also, if the file that
  191.     LiveUpdate uses to determine the availability of updates has
  192.     not changed since the last time it was run, LiveUpdate can
  193.     now detect it and avoid re-transferring it. This will make
  194.     your LiveUpdate sessions faster than before.
  195.  
  196. 2.  FTP
  197.  
  198. FTP is the backbone of file transfers on the Internet.  If LiveUpdate
  199. is unable connect via HTTP, it will attempt to use the old FTP method
  200. automatically.  FTP does not offer download resumption. Corporate
  201. customers may need to configure LiveUpdate to use an FTP proxy or 
  202. to use FTP in passive mode (as discussed above), but
  203. the updates it downloads are identical to those retrieved via HTTP.

  205. 3.  Modem
  206.  
  207. For customers who do not have access to the Internet, we offer
  208. Modem transport.  Using this, LiveUpdate can make a phone call to
  209. a computer near you (depending on your location). Note that if the
  210. call is outside your local dialing area, your long distance
  211. telephone service carrier may charge you for the call.
  212.  
  213. If a modem download is cancelled or interrupted (by line noise or
  214. call waiting), it will resume the transfer the next time LiveUpdate 
  215. is run.  This feature is especially important in countries with 
  216. unreliable phone service and should significantly reduce the amount 
  217. of time spent downloading.
  218.  
  219. 4.  LAN (Local Area Network)
  220.  
  221. Corporate customers may wish to create their own internal LiveUpdate
  222. servers to ease bandwidth usage.  For more information on this,
  223. download the LiveUpdate Administration tool referenced earlier in 
  224. this document.
  225.  
  226. In addition to the previous three transports mentioned, corporate
  227. customers may configure a network server to provide the updates
  228. using a standard file copy operation.  This may be faster and easier
  229. to configure than FTP or HTTP.  More information about the LAN
  230. transport is available from within the LiveUpdate Administration
  231. Utility.

  234. **********************************************************************
  235.                       USING AOL (America Online)
  236. **********************************************************************
  237.  
  238. If you are attempting to update your Symantec product using LiveUpdate 
  239. and you have AOL installed you should take note of the following: 
  240. If you are connecting to the Internet via your modem, LiveUpdate requires
  241. that a TCP/IP connection be established. If you have AOL installed, 
  242. you need to first dial up to your local AOL access number and go 
  243. on-line/login with your AOL account. You do not need to configure 
  244. LiveUpdate settings in any way. Run LiveUpdate from the Control Panel 
  245. Applet or from any of the Symantec Products that you have installed. 
  246. Note that Symantec is not liable for any phone charges incurred when 
  247. making this dial up connection.
  248.

  250.                        USING IBM GLOBAL NETWORK
  251. **********************************************************************
  252.  
  253. If you are already online with your IBM Global Network service you do
  254. not need to follow these instructions. The following information 
  255. only applies if:
  256.  
  257. 1) You wish to use an IBM Global Network to connect to the Internet 
  258. 2) You are not on-line when a LiveUpdate session is started
  259.  
  260. If you are using the IBM Global Network Dial-Up Networking client to 
  261. establish an Internet connection to enable LiveUpdate to connect
  262. to the Symantec LiveUpdate servers, you are required to have the 
  263. following settings:
  264.  
  265. 1) From the Control Panel double-click on the LiveUpdate icon to open
  266.    the LiveUpdate Settings Applet
  267. 2) Select the Internet tab
  268. 3) Enable "Connect to the Internet using a modem"
  269. 4) Within the "Use the Dial-Up Networking connection" select 'IBM Global 
  270.    Network'
  271. 5) Within the "User Name" field enter first the "Account" followed by 
  272.    either a period, "." or "\" and then the "User ID". 
  273.    Both the IBM Global Network Account and User ID should have been 
  274.    provided to you by IBM Global Network
  275.  
  276.                       i.e. Username: myaccount.myusername
  277.                            Password: mypassword
  278.  
  279. 6) In the "Password" field enter the password as provided to you by IBM 
  280.    Global Network
